Section I

Regulatory Overview & Scope

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, undergraduate level — popularly known as NEET (UG) — is the single-window entrance test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to undergraduate medical and allied courses in India. It regulates admissions across premium central, state, public and private institutions, including AIIMS and JIPMER.

Section II

Eligibility Standards & Academic Benchmarks

1. Age Parameters

  • Minimum Age Limit: Candidates must have completed a minimum of 17 years of age at the time of admission, or will complete that age on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the first year of the respective medical course.
  • Maximum Age Limit / Attempts: As per the revised supreme regulatory directives, there is NO upper age limit for appearing in NEET (UG). Consequently, there is no restriction on the maximum number of attempts, as long as aspirants meet the base academic benchmarks.

2. Qualifying Academic Criteria

  • Minimum Educational Level: Passed the Higher Secondary Examination (12th Standard or 10+2 equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English as compulsory subjects.
  • Minimum Sectional Marks (Aggregate in PCB): A minimum aggregate percentage in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology taken together in the qualifying examination, as detailed below.

Open / Private Candidates: Candidates who passed 10+2 from Open Schools or as private candidates with Biology as an additional subject are eligible provisionally, subject to ongoing apex court outcomes. NRIs, OCIs and Foreign Nationals are also eligible to appear for NEET (UG).
Section III

Examination Pattern & Marking Scheme

NEET (UG) is an offline (Pen-and-Paper) examination where candidates record answers on a specially designed OMR sheet. The paper is uniformly divided into four subject fields — Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. Each subject contains two sections (Section A and Section B) to give flexibility in choice.

Chemistry combines numerical interpretation (Physical), textual memory (Inorganic) and logical pathways (Organic). The newest rationalized NCERT editions have dropped several entire chapters (Solid State, Surface Chemistry, s-block), narrowing the focus fields.

Section V

Strategic Preparation Framework

  1. Establish absolute mastery over NCERT books. Over 90% of Biology and Chemistry questions are derived directly from NCERT lines. Read every paragraph, diagram caption and summary multiple times.
  2. Build strong speed mechanics and time management. Attempt 180 questions in 200 minutes (under a minute per question). Complete the 90 Biology questions within 40–45 minutes to save time for analytical Physics and numerical Chemistry.
  3. Formulate a tactical approach to Section B choices. Section B has 15 questions but you only need 10. Don't read all 15 sequentially once you've identified 10 confident answers — practise scanning quickly during mocks.
  4. Maintain a strict error-tracking and OMR marking routine. Since the exam is offline, practise with printed OMR sheets to prevent bubbling errors. Keep an Error Audit Notebook and review it regularly to reduce negative marks.
